Life, the Universe, Everything...

Shorter post today, just putting this idea out there.

I was recently talk to a friend i havent spoken with for about 2 years. We were on the topic of space travel and if we should be doing it now, or making an effort to do so. I said of course we should be trying to search for other life forms, even if it seems futile. he gave me the idea that it might not be the best thing to do at this moment. He said that if we were to visit other planets and what not, that we would be introducing the planet/ecosystem to our sicknesses. Which, as we should understand, is not the best thing to do. He proposed that we first find the cure for these illnesses before we even think about venturing out. After he had discussed that, i came to agree with him.

Just some food for thought.

  1. A "cure" for us might not be a cure for them. Say we did cure pneumonia. But the cure requires you to be currently sick with the illness - and in the meantime you came in contact with the other life forms. If you transferred the illness to them, perhaps the "cure" that works for us won't work for them.

I hope that made sense - it's late here and I'm now going to bed. :)

  2. Also, just the regular bacteria we carry around with us might not make us sick, but could harm them. No way of knowing that in advance.

  3. Interesting to say the least. They may never have experinced the bacteria and there would be no way to know how it will effect them. Which, ultimatly could kill their species off (worst case senerio), but it could happen. But then again, a senerio like this may never happen, i am sure there is another intelligent life form out there, but it probablly will be the case we will never find them.
